Just announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in sweeping articles in the Washington Post and Time magazine, politics, and food come to the forefront and to your summer picnic table. A staple of American summers, Mexican avocado and mango shipments have been halted over security concerns in Mexico. Mexican shipments into the US make up the vast majority of imports, almost 90%.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert for the Mexican state on Friday that read:
“Due to recent security incidents in Aranza, Michoacan, the U.S. government reminds U.S. citizens not to travel to the state of Michoacan.”
The U.S. suspended some new avocado shipments from Mexico after an incident that reportedly threatened the safety of American agricultural inspectors. Shipments in transit will not be affected. We will keep you informed as to further updates.
