The past few days have been head-spinning and consequential for all Americans. First we saw the Trump / Biden debate and calls for Biden to step aside. And now this new ruling from the Supremer Court likens the American president to a “King.” Conservative, right-leaning politics are leading in major polls across the country and spreading to Europe. France’s snap elections have concluded their first round, possibly ushering in a far-right government for the first time after Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) took a dramatic lead in the first stage of voting. A right-leaning sea change is upon us - more conservative social policies, immigration, and “traditional” values will follow. The next few months could see the most significant changes to American and European policymaking in decades. Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and France have all seen far-right parties — such as Fratelli d’Italia, the Party for Freedom, Alternative for Germany, or National Rally — rise up in opinion polls or win elections.
