Opinion "Harris should take Walz’s ‘liberal’ school lunch program national"
Washington Post: Free and healthy meals for all children could help transform the U.S. farm system.
I think this article from Michael Pollan is spot on! I’ve been saying the same thing for months- adopt the Walz school lunch program for the country, and it would change America. Fresh off our
interview with Alice Waters, he mentions her concept of school-supported agriculture. It’s a great article. Here is the link in the Washington Post and a few paragraphs.“Consider a proposal broached by Alice Waters, a California restaurateur (and former Montessori teacher), for something she calls school-supported agriculture.”
Michael Pollan is the author of nine books, including “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “In Defense of Food.” One of Tim Walz’s signature achievements as governor of Minnesota was to sign into law a 2023 bill that made breakfast and lunch available to all public-school students, regardless of their ability to pay. When critics attacked the policy and him as too liberal, he shut them down: “What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn.”
Walz is on to something big, and Vice President Kamala Harris should take note. Universal school lunch — which was national policy during the pandemic — needs to be part of the Harris-Walz agenda. Hungry children are not set up to learn, and offering school lunch on the basis of need stigmatizes eligible children, limiting uptake.
